Biathlon Antholz: Tomorrow the men will also be sprinting

A duel between Norway and Sweden is likely to emerge here. Because four of the five sprint races held this year went to biathletes from Scandinavia. The Norwegians Emil Hegle Svendsen and Tarjei Boe each reached the top of the podium once, while their Swedish competitor Carl Johan Bergman won two sprints.

The German Arnd Peiffer, who celebrated a home victory in the penultimate sprint of the season in Oberhof, was able to break through the Scandinavian phalanx this year. But the two Fourcade brothers, Martin and Simon, who have each been on the podium twice, are also a force to be reckoned with. The only thing that hasn't worked out for the two Frenchmen this year is victory, but perhaps Antholz will bring them luck. Or, like last year, the Russian Anton Shipulin is at the top, who pushed the crowd favorite Michael Greis (Germany) and the Norwegian Lars Berger into the places. The list of favorites is long again here. And then there are a number of outsiders who can cause a big surprise at any time from 14.30 p.m.

Three South Tyroleans at the start

South Tyrol's biathletes are also among the outsiders. Three local ski hunters will compete in the 10 km sprint tomorrow. Lukas Hofer certainly has the best chance, and is making strong progress after a slow start to the season. The 22-year-old from Montal narrowly missed the podium in the sprint in Oberhof two weeks ago and came fourth. Two days earlier he had celebrated a historic victory with the Italian relay team. Hofer is in 75nd place in the Sprint World Cup rankings with 22 points and has taken part in all five sprint competitions held so far.

Dominik Windisch is also 22 years young and, from an Italian perspective, is actually the surprise of the winter. The speedster was able to hold his own in the World Cup. In Östersund he came 23rd at the beginning of December, and a week later he finished 36th in Hochfilzen.

Dominik's older brother, Markus Windisch, takes 59th place in the Sprint World Cup rankings. In Hochfilzen he took 21st place. However, he achieved his best results in the sprint last year in Presque Isle, when he came sixth, and in the 2008/2009 season in Östersund with 7th place. In Antholz last year he finished the sprint in 16th place.

This Thursday marked the start of the Antholz Biathlon Week with the women's sprint competition in the South Tyrol Arena. Tomorrow, male colleagues will also be competing and they will also fight for victory over the short distance.
