Biathlon official Carrabre: “Knows that more Russian doping cases will emerge”

Kontiolahti (SID) Biathlon may be at risk of a doping scandal. “I know for sure that more Russian doping cases will emerge,” said James E. Carrabre, the vice president of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) responsible for medical affairs, on ZDF on the sidelines of the World Cup in Kontiolahti, Finland. Despite the Russian state doping scandal, the IBU decided in February to hold the season finale in Tyumen, Russia. In the discussions in the world association, the Canadian Carrabre expressed his concerns and spoke out against hosting the World Cup. But the majority of the IBU board, including Vice President Thomas Pfüller (Planegg), who is responsible for marketing, voted in favor of the competitions from March 22nd to 25th in Tyumen. "Firstly, we should send a signal because there have been these doping offenses by Russia," said Carrabre. "Secondly, the athletes do not believe that the doping samples they give there will be treated safely. And thirdly, the athletes are worried about their safety." Athlete spokesman Lowell Bailey also sharply criticized the world association. "It's like a slap in the face for everyone who supports clean sport and fair competitions," said the American about the decision in favor of Tyumen: "In my opinion it is time for new leadership in the IBU." The teams from Canada, the Czech Republic and the USA had already announced that they would stay away from the competitions in Russia. The Olympic relay champion Sebastian Samuelsson from Sweden and the Slovakian Klemen Bauer had also announced that they would boycott the races in Tyumen. For the German Ski Association (DSV), however, waiving the last Biathlon World Cup of the season is not up for discussion. “Athletes from all over the world have come to me and written letters to the IBU, but the IBU has kept quiet about it,” Bailey continued: “There is broad support from all over the world not to go to Tyumen this year ."
