The next biathlon wedding is on the horizon

Dzinara Alimbekava and Anton Smolski are among the best biathletes in the world. However, their citizenship is currently their downfall: as Belarusian athletes, they are not entitled to take part in World Cup competitions. Instead, the two have now celebrated a private moment of glory: They recently announced their engagement.

“I said yes,” Alimbekava wrote on social media and posted a photo showing the engagement ring on her finger. The two Belarusians, who are both active in the national team and have already won relay competitions together, have set a milestone on a private level. Successful season – then came the exclusion Last season, both Alimbekava and Smolski caused a stir in sports. He took a total of three podium places in the World Cup and, as a big highlight, Olympic silver in the individual. She was also a permanent guest in the top 10, grabbed two podium finishes and even fought for the overall World Cup. However, after Russia's attack on Ukraine at the end of February, the Russian and Belarusian athletes were excluded from biathlon competitions, which is why Alimbekava's chance for the big coup was lost.

An exclusion that continues to this day. As of now, no athletes from Russia and Belarus will be allowed to take part in IBU (International Biathlon Union) competitions this coming winter, but the topic will be discussed again in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Alimbekava and Smolski can at least console themselves with private happiness.

In any case, wedding fever is running rampant in the biathlon circus. Paulina Fialkova recently got married, as did the German Philipp Horn. Katharina Innerhofer and David Komatz also tied the knot after the end of the season, while Felix Leitner got engaged to his Anna-Maria Schreder. The Norwegian Johannes Dale also got engaged.
