“I’m totally in the basement”: A biathlon talent is retiring

Biathlon is a fascinating, exciting, thrilling sport that captivates an incredible number of fans. But biathlon can also be really tricky, especially when things aren't going well. The latter point currently applies to the Norwegian talent Filip Fjeld Andersen. The 23-year-old has had a complicated winter and is now pulling the ripcord and ending the season. His words on social media are poignant.

“Top-class sport is one of the most beautiful things there is. But he can also be damn brutal,” begins the post from Andersen, who won the overall ranking of the IBU Cup in the 2020/21 season and reached the World Cup podium once. “Unfortunately, 2023 was pretty far from what I dreamed of before the season. “I’ve been in complete disarray for the last month,” Andersen writes.

The joy of biathlon has suffered Andersen got some good results at the start of this season, finishing in the top 10 of the World Cup five times. But nothing has been going well for a few weeks now. He had to watch the World Cup as a reserve, in the World Cup he ended up outside the points several times and in the overall ranking he was in 18th place - that's a hard blow for a Norwegian.

“The ups and downs were incredibly difficult to cope with, which meant that the motivation and joy of biathlon suffered. Now I’m looking forward to a good recovery period before we try again next year.”

Your career was once in danger By the way, the young Norwegian has had an eventful life. In 2018, Andersen was diagnosed with a heart defect, which forced him to take a break for more than 1000 days. The ski hunter's career was in serious jeopardy, but he fought his way back. In the new biathlon year, Filip Fjeld Andersen wants to attack again.
