Blech: Windisch's medal dream bursts with the very last shot

The mass start over 15 kilometers ensured a more than worthy conclusion to the World Championships at Holmenkollen. The race, which was characterized by high-class duels at the shooting range and on the cross-country ski trail, remained exciting right up to the last meter and, with the victory of the Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Boe, ensured a happy ending from the perspective of the more than 25.000 frenetically celebrating Norwegians who attended the biathlon spectacle . In ideal conditions this Sunday, a clean performance at the shooting range was once again the basic prerequisite for a successful race. The above-average number of error-free shooting performances by the 30-strong field of participants ensured that around 15 athletes were fighting for a medal by the fourth and final shooting. Among them was Dominik Windisch, who so far only had to go into the penalty loop once. The speedster also began his last series of shots in these title fights confidently and dropped four of the five targets without any problems, but the 20th and very last target remained standing. This meant that Windisch's dream of a medal was shattered, also because three ski hunters in the front field, Johannes Thingnes Boe, Martin Fourcade and Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, remained error-free. While the trio at the front rushed through the trail on the final lap, the Pusterer also ran excellent last kilometers and ultimately finished the mass start in fourth place. The fight for gold, however, was won by Johannes Thingnes Boe, who, like a Viking, fended off all the attacks of the French super-biathlete Fourcade and celebrated the greatest success of his career. Living legend Ole Einar Bjoerndalen took bronze. The 42-year-old glutton finished the World Championships as a four-time medal winner.
