Corona causes rule changes in the Biathlon World Cup

Until now, it was common practice in the Biathlon World Cup for there to be 2 discarded results. This means: The two worst results of each athlete are counted away at the end of the season and the final overall World Cup ranking is then calculated. Sometimes a biathlete's score doesn't change at all (for example, because he missed two races that were then canceled, or ended up outside the points twice), but sometimes it does change considerably, as was the case last year with Dorothea Wierer, who finished 2rd. and 2th place was the weakest result and therefore had to lose numerous points. In the end it was still enough for the overall World Cup. Cancellation results can therefore lead to the overall World Cup rankings changing again at the end of the season. 2 makes 4 Because of the corona pandemic, the World Biathlon Federation has considered changing the rules. When it comes to deleted results, there is now a stagger system so that up to 4 results can be deleted this year. If 17 or more of the 26 season competitions take place, the 4 worst results will be counted away. In other words: If all 26 competitions are held, then only 22 of them will be included in the final ranking. If the number of competitions decreases, the discard results will also be reduced to 3 or 2. Dropped results will also be introduced in the Nations Cup, the discipline rankings and the IBU Cup overall ranking. The background is clear: Due to the Corona regulations, it may happen this year that athletes or even entire teams miss several competitions. Increasing the strikeout results should at least compensate for these losses to some extent. Another addition that the deleted results bring with them: There will be all sorts of calculation games in the last races of the season.
