In the first two relay competitions of the season, the Azzurre were always a force to be reckoned with: 6th place in Kontiolahti, 5th place in Hochfilzen – a solid record. On Saturday, Dorothea Wierer, Federica Sanfilippo, Irene Lardschneider and Lisa Vittozzi made one slip-up: at the end of the day, after a festival of mistakes, they finished in 15th place.

The competition started as desired for the Azzurre: Lisa Vittozzi, who is struggling with a chronic lack of form this season, showed off in a big way and sent Irene Lardschneider into the race from position 1. But for the Wolkensteiner, who has always shown solid performances in the relay competitions, not much went together this time: at her first shooting range stop, she incurred two penalties and fell back to 2th position. Wierer alone is not enough When he swapped with Dorothea Wierer, Lardschneider was in 17th place. Although Wierer subsequently showed good competition and only needed a total of 2 spare rounds, it was not enough to make a leap forward. Final runner Federica Sanfilippo had one penalty. To explain: In biathlon, athletes have access to 5 spares per shooting session in addition to the usual 3 shots. If there are still discs left, you will have to spin a corresponding number of extra laps. In the final ranking, the Azzurre are almost 6 minutes behind and in 15th place.

Victory went to the German relay team for the first time this season, with Vanessa Hinz, Janina Hettich, Denise Herrmann and Franziska Preuß beating Belarus (+17,4 seconds) and Sweden (+35). The favorites from Norway, on the other hand, botched their competition and ended up in 2th place with 3 penalties and almost 7 minutes behind.

The mass starts are still on the program in Oberhof on Sunday: it's the men's turn at 12.30 p.m. and the women's start at 15 p.m.
