A total of six World Cup competitions will be held at the foot of the Stallersattel, three each for women and three for men. After the biathletes' sprint on Thursday, the men will also compete in the short distance the next day, on Friday, January 18th, from 14.30:11.45 p.m. This year Saturday is all about the pursuit races. The women's competition begins at 15.15:10.30 a.m., while the men's competition starts at 14.15:XNUMX p.m. The Antholz Biathlon Week traditionally ends with the women's relays (XNUMX a.m.) and the men's relays (XNUMX p.m.).

“The preparations have been completed, everything is ready in Antholz. We are pleased to be hosting the Biathlon World Cup again,” says organizing committee boss Gottlieb Taschler, who in the same breath remembers two personalities from the Antholz biathlon scene who died last year: “Our race director Hubert Leitgeb and the vice-president of the OK team Herbert Berger unfortunately had to leave this world all too soon. We miss them not only because of their actions in their respective areas, but above all as people. We will always remember her.”

Dress rehearsal of the World Cup in Nove Mesto

Antholz is the sixth World Cup destination this winter. And these are such special competitions for the best biathletes in the world because this year they are the dress rehearsal for the World Championships in Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic. After Antholz there are no longer any World Cup competitions on the program. Speaking of the World Cup: The people of Antholz would like to bring the title fights to South Tyrol in 2019. They will also be campaigning hard during the World Cup week so that they can get the necessary votes from the member countries at the next IBU Congress.

But back to the World Cup: Norwegian Tora Berger and Frenchman Martin Fourcade are traveling to South Tyrol in the red jersey as overall leaders. While Fourcade is ahead in both the sprint and pursuit rankings, Berger is in second place in the sprint rankings behind the German Miriam Gössner. As far as the relay ranking is concerned, Norwegians are currently in the lead and are also among the first contenders for victory in Antholz.

Almost 70.000 fans come to the Südtirol Arena The Biathlon World Cup in Antholz is Italy's largest winter sports event. Almost 70.000 people flock to the long valley east of Bruneck for the four days of competition. “The audience is becoming more and more international, but the German fans still set the tone. In recent years, however, an increasing number of fans from Scandinavian countries and Russia have come to us. And what I’m particularly pleased about, of course, is that more and more local biathlon fans from South Tyrol are finding their way to Antholz,” explains Taschler.

Of course, the OC boss would be particularly pleased if the local athletes achieved a top ranking. Two years ago, for example, when the Italian men's relay team made it onto the podium in the “Südtirol Arena”. “This year the women in particular are in shape. Maybe the quartet around Karin Oberhofer will create a sensation,” said Taschler.

Lukas Hofer recently confirmed that his form curve is also pointing upwards. The Montaler took 12th place at the mass start in Ruhpolding on Sunday. And maybe things can go even further in the home race. The local battle buffs would wholeheartedly begrudge him or the other “Azzurri”.
