The IBU Cup is stopping in Ridnaun again

The biathlon fever is rising and rising. The World Cup starts in Kontiolahti, Finland, in a few days. In the far north of Europe, every point for the overall ranking is fought for on the cross-country ski trails and at the shooting ranges, while thousands upon thousands of spectators around the world watch the popular winter sport live or on television. When the first snowfalls are expected in the rest of Europe, the ski hunters will head further south: and from December 15th to 18th to the South Tyrolean Ridnaun Valley. In 2022 it will be the second time that an IBU Cup will be held in Ridnaun. The IBU Cup final of the 2021/22 season took place there in March of this year. At that time, the overall ranking was also decided in the Ridnaun Biathlon Center, with the Frenchwoman Lou Jeanmonnot and the Norwegian Erlend Bjoentegaard ultimately winning. The upcoming edition will be the second stop on the 2022/23 season calendar after the opener in Idre Fjall, Sweden. “A cold front is forecast for the weekend” Preparations are already in full swing in Ridnaun, even if South Tyrol still has to wait for the first real onset of winter. “A cold front is forecast for this weekend. When it cools down, snow in Ridnaun is no longer a problem. So we just have to be patient,” says race director Manuel Volgger. The fact that the OK team doesn't worry unnecessarily is also due to the wealth of experience that they have already accumulated in Ridnaun. The European Biathlon Championships took place in Wipptal three times, in 1996, 2011 and most recently in 2018. With a few exceptions, the IBU Cup has pitched its tents here every year since the 1990s, so Ridnaun can now be called a classic. Once, in January 1993, they even acted as a World Cup replacement for Oberhof. “The remaining preparations are already well advanced. Now the snow is coming and then we are almost ready to go,” says Volgger optimistically. While we still have to wait for Ms. Holle, the OK team has already put the program together in collaboration with the international biathlon federation IBU. The athletes are expected on Monday and Tuesday, December 12th and 13th, and on Tuesday they can also complete free training on the competition track. The next day the first official training takes place before the sprint competitions start on Thursday. Both women and men pass the shooting range twice, but the women cover 7,5 kilometers and the men 10 kilometers on the cross-country ski trail. Training will take place again on Friday before work starts at the weekend. In the pursuit competitions on Saturday there will be four shots each, the women will run 10 kilometers and the men will run 12,5 kilometers. Finally, on Sunday there will be a mass start 60 each, with the women completing 12,5 kilometers and the men 15 kilometers on the cross-country ski trail, stopping again four times at the shooting range. Provisions have also already been made for the live broadcast of the spectacular and exciting competitions. When the starting signal for the sprints is given on December 15th, around 10 state-of-the-art television cameras will provide the free live stream, which can be viewed worldwide, with images from the Ridnaun Biathlon Center.
