The knot is broken: Wierer wins in Antholz!

It certainly hasn't been Dorothea Wierer's winter so far. After a dip in form at the start of the season, she had to grit her teeth to stay in touch with the world's best. Since the turn of the year, the 31-year-old has looked like a completely different person: confident at the shooting range, with significantly more power on the cross-country ski trails, she is once again putting fear into the competition. Wierer reached his peak in the last race before the Olympics. She won the mass start race in her native Antholz in impressive fashion.

Wierer has been there for the past few days in the individual race and in the relay Even though she narrowly missed the podium, she seemed even more determined to pull it off at the end on Sunday. In the absence of the overall World Cup leader Marte Olsbu Røiseland and the two Öberg sisters, who are all skipping the World Cup in Antholz and preparing for the Olympics (from February 5th), she showed by far her best performance of the season. First win in 60 weeks Although Wierer had to go into the penalty loop once after the first two shooting sessions, she still maintained contact with the leaders. The local hero ultimately remained flawless on the third and fourth attempts and went into the final round in second place. There she mobilized the very last reserves of strength, passed the leader Anais Chevallier-Bouchet with an impressive start and dragged herself across the finish line completely exhausted. Dzinara Alimbekava from Belarus and Chevallier-Bouchet remained second and third.

During the run-out, Wierer celebrated her 13th World Cup victory, the first in exactly 60 weeks and one day. The last time the South Tyrolean was at the top of the podium was on November 28, 2020 at the season opener in Kontiolahti. This liberation provides a lot of confidence, especially with regard to the Olympic Games. After a short training camp, Italy's biathlon team is heading to Beijing next weekend.

Lisa Vittozzi will also be at the start at the Winter Games in China, even though she made a huge mistake in the individual races in Antholz. In the mass start on Sunday, she missed the target in all five attempts in the first shooting. After a total of nine penalties, she took 30th and last place. There were no other Azzurre in action on the final day.

Dorothea Wierer ensured a crowning conclusion to the Antholz World Cup week and showed her best performance of the season in the last race before the Olympics. Their performance on Sunday at the home race was simply fantastic.
