The new biathlon calendar is a topic of conversation

The biggest news concerns the introduction of the Super Sprint, a shooting-heavy discipline consisting of qualification and finals. The format is extremely complicated: In the qualification, the athletes who start at an interval of 15 seconds have to complete three laps of one kilometer each. You shoot twice – lying down and standing. Dorothea Wierer & Co. can use one reloading cartridge per shooting session. If a disc remains standing, a penalty loop of 75 meters must be completed. Only the best 30 qualify for the final, which takes place on the same day.

As is the case with a mass start, the race starts at the same time. In contrast to the qualification, the biathlon cracks have to complete five laps and shoot four times. The athlete who crosses the finish line first wins. Only one such competition takes place in the entire winter, but in Oslo, of all places, the last World Cup stop where the fight for the overall World Cup could still be open. Tough opening program A second reason why the teams and athletes are not satisfied with the calendar is the start of the season, which takes place in Kontiolahti (Finland). The individual competition and sprint are scheduled there on two consecutive days. The fears that the strain at the start of the season could be too great are certainly justified.

The provisional calendar also shows that the athletes will not be allowed a break after the World Championships in Pokljuka (Slovenia). Just five days after the last medal decision, a women's relay is scheduled to take place in Beijing, the 2022 Olympic venue. It is doubtful whether all the stars will make the long journey to Asia.
