German women’s relay team too strong – Italy beaten back

For a long time there was a three-way battle at the top of the field between Germany, France and Ukraine. Then Laura Dahlmeier was sent onto the cross-country ski trail as the final runner of the German relay – and then impressively showed that she is currently in great shape. Despite an initial deficit of almost 15 seconds and a missed shot in the prone stage, she drew level with the leader Marie Dorin Habert, remained, like the Frenchwoman, clean in the final standing stage and had enough juice in her legs in the last two kilometers to beat Dorin Habert to hang on and thus give the German squadron victory. Striking: With nine spares, the German relay used six more than France and third-placed Ukraine, but got a lot out of it while running.

The Italian relay had to pay a lot of lessons and ended up in 12th place in the final ranking. Without Dorothea Wierer, who was given a break, Lisa Vittozzi, Nicole Gontier, Alexia Runggaldier and Federica Sanfilippo showed nerves, especially on the shooting range. The “Azzurre” had to reload a total of twelve times, Gontier and Sanfilippo even shot so inaccurately in their standing and prone positions that the three reloaders were not enough and they each had to go into the penalty loop once.

This concludes the weekend in Pokljuka. The biathletes are now moving to Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic, where the third World Cup stage is scheduled for next weekend.

Good advertising for the sport of biathlon was offered on Sunday afternoon at the women's relay race in Pokljuka. In the end, the German athletes prevailed, while the Italian relay team without Dorothea Wierer only played an extra role.
