Germany wins the men's relay, Italy causes the surprise

Antholz says goodbye to the 20.000 fans in the Südtirol Arena with a much celebrated success for the Germans and second place for the Italians. In fantastic weather and a great atmosphere, Germany celebrated its second victory in a row after Oberhof in the relay competition. After the two starting runners Christoph Stephan and Daniel Böhm, the German relay was still in fourth place, then Arnd Pfeiffer stepped up a gear and took the lead, which Michael Greis maintained until the finish.

However, the sensation was caused by the Italian quartet, which achieved second place, just 18,6 seconds behind Germany. After placing 10th and 7th in the first two relay competitions, the “Azzurri” climbed onto the podium for the first time this winter. Christian De Lorenzi moved to 7th place, the experienced Rene Laurent Vuillermoz then moved up to third place. Lukas Hofer from Montal gained another place with a very good performance on the cross-country ski trail and Markus Windisch showed strong nerves as the final runner and remained second. Third place went to Norway. Ole Einar Björndalen ran the fastest time of the day and contributed significantly to his team's success. Russia had to settle for 4th place, ahead of Austria.

In the World Cup relay rankings, Germany overtakes the Norwegians, while the Austrians move from 5th place to third. Italy also gained four places and is now in 5th place.

voting for the race Michael Greis, Germany (winner) I didn't notice much of the other three runners because I had to prepare myself. But my colleagues Christoph Stephan, Daniel Böhm and Arnd Peiffer showed a strong race that I actually just had to run home. We are one of the favorites at the World Cup, but in such competitions it depends on our form on the day. We have very strong competition from Norway, Sweden, Russia, Austria and France. And even countries like Italy, which no one actually accounts for, can come as a surprise. It's nice when many teams can celebrate the victory.

Lukas Hofer, Italy (2nd place) It was a tremendous feeling to climb onto the podium here in front of our audience. Everyone, really everyone, cheered us on and was happy for us. We almost could have won, but second place is sensational for me and my teammates and that's why we're all over the moon. We almost reached the podium in the last World Cup races, but in the end it didn't work out. Today we had the luck on our side, which is what it takes to be ahead.
