Germany's biathlon star between wedding and World Cup fever

Denise Herrmann's personal highlight is coming up in September. Germany's best biathlete marries her fiancé Thomas Wick on Lake Chiemsee. The 33-year-old has already celebrated her bachelorette party with a lot of fun, including a fun act in an old racing suit, bridal veil and wooden rifle in the Ruhpolding World Cup Arena. There the Saxon woman straps on her real weapon and roller skis again when it comes to medals at the Summer World Championships from Friday to Sunday.

“I have never competed in a summer World Championships before and I am really looking forward to the races. It’s always a cool thing at home in front of fans,” said Herrmann in an interview with the German Press Agency. The program includes the super sprints on Friday, the sprints on Saturday and the mass start races at the end the following day. Training on the Seiser Alm Herrmann has just completed three intensive weeks of preparation, first on the Seiseralm with her boyfriend Wick (31), an ex-cross-country skier, then with the German team at Lavazè and then in Obertilliach. And the former world champion still exudes enormous energy and curiosity, also in her collaboration with the new Norwegian assistant coach Sverre Olsbu Röiseland. “Resignation was never an issue for me.” Denise Herrmann After her individual triumph at the Olympic Games in Beijing in February, speculation arose as to whether she would end her career at its peak. “If you only relate it to successes, you could have said, what else do you want to achieve? But resigning wasn't an issue for me. That only came from outside,” said Herrmann. She has a concrete plan for how she wants to approach the end of her career. “In the end it has to feel round and I could imagine how it feels round. But that wasn’t it after the Olympics,” said Herrmann, without revealing any details.

Physically everything has to be right, as at 33 she is no longer the youngest athlete. “But everything is still green and I’m still having fun,” said Herrmann. In addition, as an athlete, success is about much more than just that. "I haven't been doing biathlon for that long, a few things still tickle me and I'm striving to be able to implement them," said Herrmann, who only switched from cross-country skiing to ski hunters in 2016. Antholz 2026 is no longer possible But one thing is clear: the 2026 Winter Games in Antholz will take place without them. In addition to the house construction in Ruhpolding starting next year, family planning will also be in focus at some point. With a view to the sporting career, things are only thought about every year.

That's how Herrmann sees it. And she can concentrate fully. Because she doesn't have the stress of preparing for the wedding. “Fortunately, I have Tommy at home, he takes a lot of care from me. I'm usually presented with the finished idea and then just have to approve it," said Herrmann, who is really looking forward to the bigger celebration, laughing. And what name does she have then? She hasn't decided yet; she can also imagine a double name. “Wick-Herrmann isn’t that long,” she joked.
