The World Cup dress rehearsal in Antholz can begin

A total of six competitions will be held until Sunday, with 65.000 spectators expected. This year's edition of the renowned South Tyrolean sporting event is also the dress rehearsal for the World Championships in February 2020, which will also take place in the South Tyrol Arena.

When the best biathletes in the world tackle the 14.30 kilometer distance with two shooting tests on Thursday from 7,5 p.m., all eyes in the South Tyrol Arena will be on two “Azzurre”. No wonder: local hero Dorothea Wierer and Lisa Vittozzi from Sappada not only lead the overall World Cup rankings. The two Italian ski hunters are also at the top of the sprint rankings, although Vittozzi is ahead here.

The yellow jersey of the World Cup leaders is worn by Dorothea Wierer. For the 28-year-old from Niederrasen, this circumstance is something very special. “Of course it gives me additional motivation to come to Antholz as World Cup leader. But at the same time it is also a burden, after all I want to do particularly well in front of my own fans. At the moment my form is no longer as good as it was at the beginning of the season, when everything really went by itself. But the trend is now pointing upwards again and I’m looking forward to the competitions at home,” says Dorothea Wierer. Many contenders for the sprint victory The closest circle of favorites in the Antholz Sprint also includes others. Anastasiya Kuzmina from Slovakia, for example, who won the last World Cup sprint in Ruhpolding. Or last season's World Cup winner Kaisa Makarainen. The Finn was in excellent shape, especially at the start of this winter, but has struggled with her form in recent weeks. Meanwhile, the fans from Germany who flock to the South Tyrolean biathlon mecca every year will be keeping their fingers crossed for Laura Dahlmeier, Franziska Preuss & Co. Dahlmeier had health problems in the summer, but is slowly getting closer to her top form.

On Friday the competition program in Antholz continues with the men's sprint (10 km). The starting signal here will also be given at 14.30 p.m. Spectators can look forward to double the sporting pleasure this weekend. Saturday is all about the pursuit competitions. The start time for the women (10 km) was set at 13.30:12,5 p.m. and that of the men (15.30 km) at 12.45:12,5 p.m. The World Cup week in the South Tyrol Arena ends on Sunday with the mass starts. At 15.30 p.m. the biathletes will set off on the 15 km long loop, while the starting signal will be given for the men (XNUMX km) at XNUMX p.m.
