Dorothea Wierer achieves her best World Cup placement

Dorothea Wierer was 18,7 seconds short of her first podium finish in the Biathlon World Cup on Thursday. In the end, the highly talented Puster native was still able to celebrate: With fifth place, she recorded the best individual placement in her career to date. Apart from sixth place at the Olympics, eighth place at the start of the season in Östersund seemed to be the best result so far. Overall, this is Wierer's fourth top ten placement.

For a long time in the sprint race in Pokljuka it even looked as if the South Tyrolean could make it onto the podium for the first time. She made no mistakes in the first shooting and went back into the cross-country ski run in third place. In the second shooting she missed once. Although she crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 21:49,9 minutes, several podium contenders were still on the track at that point. In the end, Wierer was relegated to fifth place.

Nicole Gontier came in 15th as the second best Azzurra. The other South Tyroleans did not make it into the top 30: Michela Ponza was 40th (1 error), Karin Oberhofer took 52nd place (4) and Alexia Runggaldier took 63rd place (3). They all had to contend with strong gusts of wind at the shooting range.

Sensational victory for Innerhofer The Austrian newcomer Katharina Innerhofer, however, made no mistakes in the difficult conditions and didn't miss a beat on the cross-country ski trail. At the finish she was surprisingly 9,2 seconds ahead of the Russian Daria Virolaynen and 12,1 seconds ahead of the Belarusian Nadezhda Skardino. Virolaynen and Skardino also shot clean. Innerhofer achieved her best World Cup placement to date in January with 22nd place in the individual competition in Ruhpolding.

Dorothea Wierer achieves her best World Cup placement

The 23-year-old biathlete from Rasen is still in Olympic form: after sixth place in Sochi, she made people sit up and take notice again at the World Cup in Pokljuka. She took fifth place in the women's sprint. The victory surprisingly went to the Austrian Katharina Innerhofer.
