Dorothea Wierer gets the big ball when...

After Dorothea Wierer made a small preliminary decision in the Oslo Sprint, she now has to close the bag in the pursuit (Saturday) and the mass start (Sunday). But the calculation isn't quite that simple - especially if you take into account the two deleted results for each athlete. Below is the current status.

The top 4 in the overall World Cup without taking the cancellation results into account: 1. Wierer 882 points 2. Vittozzi 852 3. Roeiseland 791 4. Kuzmina784

If you subtract 2 strike results each, it looks like this: 1. Wierer 846 points 2. Vittozzi 844 3. Roeiseland 780 4. Kuzmina779

Wierer's rivals can achieve a maximum of the following total points (60 points per win): Vittozzi (1 race) 904 points Roeiseland (2 races) 900 Kuzmina (2 races) 899

Since Wierer is the only one who has scored points in all 23 previous races and would currently have to deduct a 22nd place (19 points) and a 24th place (17 points) as deleted results, the deleted results will now benefit her. Because in the mass start race on Sunday, any result from Wierer starting from 22nd place would be canceled and the 19 points that had been deleted so far would be credited to her. So she is guaranteed this minimum of 19 points in the last race.

In plain language, this means that Wierer's 40 points are enough for fifth place in the pursuit on Saturday, making him uncatchable for everyone else with a total of 5 points.

Should Wierer finish 6th in the pursuit, the decision would be postponed; If Vittozzi wins the mass start, Wierer would need at least a 21st place there. And if Wierer's results in the pursuit were worse, Roeiseland and Kuzmina would also have (small) chances.

The fact is, however, that even in the worst case scenario, if both last races were to be canceled results for Wierer, her rivals would still be challenged: Wierer would be credited with the two current canceled results and with these 36 points she would have a total of 882 points. To exceed this value, Vittozzi would need to finish at least 5th in their single race, while Roeiseland and Kuzmina would need 2 and 102 points respectively from 103 races. For this you need a win and at least 4th place or 2nd and 3rd or 2 2nd places.
