Dorothea Wierer runs onto the podium in Antholz

The reigning pursuit world champion Laura Dahlmeier confirmed her improving form with a brilliant performance at the Antholz Biathlon Center. Arguably the best ski hunter in the world started the race in second place and lost a few places after a mistake in the first shooting. After that, however, she remained flawless and left one competitor after the next behind. Dahlmeier celebrated the 19th World Cup victory of her career, the second of the current season.

In the fight for the remaining podium places, a thrilling duel broke out between Darya Domracheva and Dorothea Wierer. The latter started seventh and, despite making one mistake in the first and third stages, consistently made up ground. A few hundred meters from the finish she passed second-placed Domracheva. When the Belarusian Wierer got on the stick in the final bend and lost it, the duel was decided. To be fair, Domracheva didn't launch any more counterattacks and so the racer's third individual podium finish in the Olympic winter was sealed. In Antholz, Wierer is beaming from the “Stockerl” for the third time.

Behind Domracheva, the Norwegian sprint winner from the previous day, Tiril Eckhoff, took fourth place - immediately ahead of “oldie” Kaisa Mäkäräinen, who ran from 26th to fifth place. She continues to lead the overall World Cup ahead of Anastasiya Kuzmina and Wierer, who are eleventh today.

All “Azzurre” in the top 30

The in-form Belluno Lisa Vittozzi, who didn't get past 40th place in the sprint, put together an even more impressive comeback. Although she had to go into the penalty loop once, she still raced into the top ten in ninth place. The two South Tyroleans Federica Sanfilippo and Alexia Runggaldier also put on a good performance, earning numerous World Cup points as 21st and 23rd respectively. While Sanfilippo was particularly impressive on the cross-country ski trail with three missed shots, Runggaldier shone with a flawless performance at the shooting range. The fourth “Azzurra” in the group, Nicole Gontier, also made it into the top 25 in 30th place.

Today's program at the Biathlon World Cup in Antholz continues at 15 p.m. with the men's pursuit race. The mass start competitions follow on Sunday.

Dorothea Wierer runs onto the podium in Antholz

The first pursuit race on Saturday at the World Cup in the South Tyrol Arena was a really big biathlon break: Laura Dahlmeier took victory in front of 22.000 enthusiastic spectators, while the celebrated local hero Dorothea Wierer came second.
