Dorothea Wierer narrowly misses out on a World Cup medal

Just a few hours after the surprising... fifth place for Dominik Windisch Dorothea Wierer achieved the next South Tyrolean top result at the World Championships on Holmenkollen. However, the 25-year-old racer was not entirely satisfied with her performance because for a long time it looked as if she could win her third World Championship medal after the two relay bronze medals in 2013 and 2015.

Wierer put on a flawless performance at the shooting range and recorded excellent split times. On the last lap, however, Marie Dorin Habert, who had been leading until then, lost around ten seconds and finally crossed the finish line with the second best time. Wierer was later pushed to fifth place by Gabriela Soukalova, bronze medalist Laura Dahlmaier and new world champion Tiril Eckhoff. With a very strong performance, the Norwegian ran 15 seconds ahead of second-placed Dorin Habert.

“The legs didn’t want to”

"I just didn't feel comfortable on the skis today. My legs weren't working properly. But I've secured a good start number for the pursuit tomorrow. I'll attack hard and give it my all to achieve a good result," was the conclusion von Wierer after the race.

Oberhofer and Sanfilippo outside the top 30

Karin Oberhofer has also already set her sights on the next race: "I started well, but the two shooting errors set me back. There is an incredible atmosphere here. I want to use that in the pursuit." In the end, the woman from Feldthurn had to settle for 36th place. Federica Sanfilippo was even further back in the rankings. She took 50th place after three shooting errors. In contrast, the fourth Azzurra in the group, 21-year-old Lisa Vittozzi, was able to convince with 20th place.

Dorothea Wierer narrowly misses out on a World Cup medal

Dorothea Wierer still has to wait for her first individual medal at a biathlon world championship. Edelmetall was within reach during the sprint in Lillehammer. In the end she took fifth place.
