Eckhoff & Co. fear: Norway is no longer at the top of the world?

“Nobody knows where the journey is going,” says Tiril Eckhoff. She worries when she looks ahead to the new season. The fluorine ban, which was passed by the biathlon association IBU and the ski association FIS due to health and environmental concerns, is hitting the winter sports nation in the far north harder than any other. For over 30 years, the Norwegian waxmen have acquired a wealth of knowledge, which has now evaporated from one season to the next - just like Eckhoff & Co.'s advantage over other nations. “We are used to having good skis. Now the question is whether we will get a shock this winter,” says Eckhoff. The search for “gold skis” changed fundamentally after the decision. That's why the lubrication team of the Norwegian national biathlon team is working hard to crack the code of success again. Whether this will succeed is anything but certain. “It will be like the Wild West,” says wax manager Tobias Dahl Fenre: “Suddenly it could be that Spain has the perfect solution.” The times when the Norwegians always found the perfect mixture in huge wax trucks seem to be gone to be over. Data thrown overboard “All the knowledge, all the products, the databases through which we knew which wax was the best are now worthless. We have to start from 0,” asserts Fenre, who at the same time says that this rule change will also harm other nations and athletes: “I believe that Denise Herrmann, who uses more strength, is heavier and runs with greater impact, is worse Wax base suffers.” The German disagrees: “You have to have strength if you want to cross-country ski – especially when skating. Sometimes it can be a disadvantage because I am heavier than others, but cross-country skiers with strength in their arms and legs are usually fast in any competition.” In any case, it is already clear that the new season will be an extremely exciting one. And when you consider that Dorothea Wierer has often been inferior to the competing nations in terms of ski preparation in the past and still won the overall World Cup two times in a row, you can only expect good things from a South Tyrolean perspective.
