A German biathlon fairytale on Holmenkollen

Erik Lesser will end his glorious career this weekend. Before the 33-year-old left the big stage, he gave another goosebumps moment: On Saturday he won the pursuit at Holmenkollen in impressive fashion. Lesser celebrated his first victory in more than six years and secured the third World Cup success of his career.

Lesser is a guy with rough edges. Someone who always expresses his opinion bluntly in interviews. Someone who also looks beyond the shooting range and has been with us in the last few days a special Ukraine campaign caused a stir . That's why every biathlete and fan granted him this success this Saturday.

The 2015 Pursuit World Champion showed the perfect race on Oslo's local mountain: Starting from position 5, Lesser was in fabulous shape at the shooting range and took advantage of the moment at the last stop. While Sturla Holm Lægreid, who had been leading until then, made two mistakes, the German made no mistakes and was the first to turn into the final lap. He defended his 12 second lead over Lægreid and overall World Cup winner Quentin Fillon Maillet perfectly and was right to celebrate at the finish. On Sunday, Lesser wants to cause another sensation in his last race, the mass start. Hofer outstanding, Windisch in the biathlon pension Lukas Hofer also showed an outstanding competition. The Montaler only finished in 38th place in Friday's sprint, but came up trumps in the pursuit and gained no fewer than 24 (!) places. In the end, Hofer, who didn't miss a single shot, finished in 14th place - an outstanding performance.

Meanwhile, Dominik Windisch's career came to an end on Saturday. The Pusterer, who started from position 25, had to do a total of seven extra loops and was relegated to 43rd place. This meant that the speedster was unable to qualify for the final mass start on Sunday. One of the greatest South Tyrolean biathlon careers is now over.
