A controversial winner in Antholz – South Tyrolean defeated

Bø and Fourcade were the big favorites to win the Antholz Sprint in advance, as they won 11 of 13 World Cup competitions this year. But in the end, a completely different athlete sprinted into the spotlight: The Russian Alexander Loginov - who was one of the extended favorites - showed one both on the shooting range (0 errors) and on the cross-country ski trail (second best time in the field, even better than the running miracle Bø). impressive performance and ran to the gold medal in front of the well-filled, but not full, grandstand in the Südtirol Arena.

Loginov celebrated the greatest triumph of his career. A career that also had its dark side: in 2014 he was banned for two years for doping. After his return, he slowly fought his way back to the top of the world and celebrated a great sense of achievement with the silver medal in the sprint at the 2 World Championships in Östersund. But he couldn't get rid of the doping stigma. In any case, the Russian crashed a French party in Antholz: Before he had crossed the finish line, two French athletes, Quentin Fillon Maillet and Martin Fourcade, were in the lead and ended up taking silver and bronze.

Johannes Thingnes Bø's performance was surprising. The big dominator of the last few years - usually always a rocket on his skis - had an unusually difficult time in Antholz and ended up in fifth position with a shooting error. Is the several-week baby break that Bø took in January still bothering the Norwegian? In the end, his brother Tarjei finished one place ahead of Johannes in fourth place. For the two South Tyroleans Lukas Hofer and Dominik Windisch, the sprint didn't go as planned. Hofer, who started the race with starting number 1, missed once both standing and lying down and finished the race in 21st place. The Montaler couldn't repeat his strong performance from the mixed relay - just like Dominik Windisch, who shot three tickets at the shooting range and ended up outside the top 3 in the ranking. In the end he finished 30th.
