A Swede is the new IBU president

The Swede defeated Latvian Baiba Broka with 39:12 votes in the afternoon election in Porec, Croatia, and will succeed Anders Besseberg for an initial period of four years. The Norwegian resigned in April amid massive allegations of corruption and doping cover-ups.

Media representatives are not admitted to the IBU Congress, this follows from Article 32.2 of the IBU Constitution. However, the current statutes will be put to the test on Saturday. Overall, the IBU is currently striving for transparency.

Crisis management on the Adriatic beach On Friday, the world association also published the report of the Association of Leading National Anti-Doping Agencies (iNado), which had assessed the IBU's anti-doping work. iNado certifies that the measures are of “good quality” and that the department meets the standards of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). At the same time, there is a need to increase transparency in dealing with doping cases and to better document processes and responsibilities .

The congress also rejected a request from the Russian association RBU to regain full membership in the world association. Russia remains a provisional member; a decision to the contrary would have come as a surprise. The IBU only informed Russia's association and four of its athletes about further violations of the anti-doping rules at the end of August.

The IBU is looking for a way out of the crisis in Porec. According to a WADA report in April, corrupt officials in the world association are said to have covered up 2011 doping cases, mainly Russian ones, since 65. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) then stopped all payments to the IBU and only promised a continuation when a new president was elected and the anti-doping procedure was reformed. Besseberg himself still denies the allegations. He once again protested his innocence in a letter to the delegates in Porec.
