Antholz: Half a men's relay is not enough

Thomas Bormolini, Dominik Windisch, Tommaso Giacomel and Lukas Hofer were certainly capable of a podium finish or at least a top 5 place at the home World Cup on Sunday. Because some top runners from other nations were spared in the men's relay. But in the end Italy had to settle for 8th place.

The Azzurri started the competition in a way that was anything but ideal. The otherwise so consistent Thomas Bormolini had to reload four times and handed over to Dominik Windisch in 4th place, 12 seconds behind the leader. The man from Oberrasn did an excellent job, missed only once and led Italy to 48th place. He was able to minimize the gap to a total of 7 seconds. Only Windisch and Hofer are convincing But Tommaso Giacomel then experienced a pitch-black day. The 21-year-old from Trentino is still looking for his form from the start of the season and even had to go into the penalty loop once. He also bought 6 spares. All hopes of a top spot were gone. Italy fell back to 10th place. The gap to the top was almost 3 minutes. In the end, Lukas Hofer did damage control. He was quick on the trail and only had to reload twice at the shooting range. He still led the Azzurri to 2th place.

Norway took the victory – and in an outstanding way. With Sturla Holm Lægreid, the Bø brothers and Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen, the Norwegians lined up with the best line-up and made it clear from the start who would win. With a total of only 4 spares, they had a lead of almost 2 minutes over Russia at the finish. Germany and France followed in third and fourth place. Some top athletes were spared in both Germany and France. For example, Benedikt Doll, Johannes Kühn, Erik Lesser and Quentin Fillon Maillet and Emilien Jacquelin opted out of the relay.

The World Cup weekend in Antholz ends at 15.15:XNUMX p.m. with the women's mass start. Dorothea Wierer is aiming for a podium place.
