A cross-country skiing luminary wants to shake up the biathlon scene

The Swede announced this on her Instagram profile on Sunday evening. The 26-year-old's move to the biathlon camp comes as a surprise, after all Nilsson is considered an absolute top star in the cross-country skiing scene. In 108 World Cup races, the sprint specialist achieved a total of 41 podium places, and she even ended up at the top 23 times. In 2019 she won the small crystal ball in the sprint classification. The absolute highlight of her career was the 2018 Olympic Games, when she was crowned Olympic sprint champion in Pyeongchang. “I feel like I don’t want to wait any longer.” Stina Nilsson Now the Swede wants to know from the ski hunters. She has been planning this step for a long time, but has now put it into action earlier than expected. “I had planned to compete in cross-country skiing at the next Olympic Games and then change sports after 2022. Because of my injury, I had a lot of time to think and do my first shooting exercises and I feel that I don't want to wait any longer," she is quoted on the world association's website. Nilsson had a difficult season this year, which she had to end early due to rib problems. Risky, but not impossible “I respect the biathlon challenge,” said the Swede. “I need to get into a routine of what it’s like to walk with a gun on my back. I also have to research the weapon itself first, and I also have to learn how to behave ideally on the shooting range. It won’t be easy, but I’m looking forward to it.” Certainly: the step from cross-country skiing to biathlon is a big one and therefore involves a certain amount of risk. The German Denise Herrmann proves that this model can also be successful. She switched to the ski hunters in 2016, became world champion three years later in Östersund and this year even snatched the Sprint World Cup from Dorothea Wierer.
