A season to forget for Dorothea Wierer

Dorothea Wierer (lawn), fourth in the overall World Cup standings, had to go into the penalty loop twice after the prone shooting in heavy snow. For the “Azzurre”, who had achieved fourth and fifth place in the first two relays of the season, a top result was already a long way off after the first shooting test. Things went better for Wierer standing and so she led Italy from 20th and last place to at least 18th place until the first change.

So things could only get better. And indeed Nicole Gontier and Lisa Vittozzi started a little race to catch up. Gontier led Italy to 14th place, Vitozzi to eleventh place. Now it was up to final runner Karin Oberhofer to take the chestnuts out of the fire.

The 29-year-old got off to a brilliant start on the cross-country ski trail. In prone shooting, Oberhofer had to reload once and left the shooting range in ninth place. She was able to maintain this position until the standing stage, but fell just behind Lisa Hauser from Austria after the test. In the cross-country ski run, Oberhofer regained ninth place and defended it to the finish.

Czech Republic wins

Victory went to the Czech Republic, which triumphed with a team of Eva Puskarcikova, Gabriela Soukalova, Jitka Landova and Veronika Vitkova in 1:23.57,7 hours. Second place went to Belarus, host Germany came third. The Czechs seem to feel comfortable in Germany, as the quartet won the relay in Oberhof just a week ago.

The World Cup in Ruhpolding continues on Thursday with the men's relay. Two South Tyroleans, Lukas Hofer (Montal) and Dominik Windisch (Rasen), are used here.

Dorothea Wierer, however, can rehabilitate herself on Friday. Then the women's sprint takes place in Oberhof.

The fifth World Cup stage for biathletes began on Wednesday afternoon with a women's relay. However, for South Tyrol's flagship ski hunter, the competition in Ruhpolding didn't go as planned at all.
