Erik Lesser is ready for his new career

The 34-year-old German drew a line after the 2021/22 Olympic season and announced his retirement at the beginning of winter after eleven years in the World Cup. After Arnd Pfeiffer, the best German biathlete at the time and Lesser's long-time roommate, had surprisingly left the professional circuit a year earlier, Lesser followed suit. He said at the time that he had had enough of being an athlete and could finish biathlon with a clear conscience. A man of clear words After Lesser announced his retirement, it was as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. The past World Cup season was the most successful of his entire career. In total, Lesser won three Olympic and seven world championship medals, two of which were gold. In the World Cup he achieved an impressive six victories and 40 podium finishes. In addition to his sporting successes, Lesser was popular with colleagues and fans because of his relaxed and open manner. As an athlete spokesman in the World Cup, he did not mince his words and always stood by his opinion - especially on critical issues, such as recently with his clear positioning on the Olympic Games in Beijing or the Ukraine War.

In the future, Erik Lesser will also benefit from his know-how and eloquence in his new job as a TV expert for the German public television station ARD. There he will meet Arnd Pfeiffer, who was already working as an expert for ARD last winter. For the popular program sports shoes Lesser is intended to provide a unique insight into the sport of biathlon and report on his personal experiences. The two friends have been publishing a joint podcast for some time now: Das Biathlon double room stands for “Babble about biathlon from the here and now”, 52 episodes have been published so far.

Lesser will make his debut at the World Summer Biathlon Championships in Rupholding, which will take place from August 24th to 28th. In addition to his work in front of the microphone, Lesser would also like to pursue a coaching career in the future.
