Another Russian victory in Antholz

The third day of competition in Antholz took place in fantastic weather. Bright sunshine, a grandstand filled to capacity, numerous spectators along the route and an exciting race: That was the 4x6 km relay today, the first of two races on Saturday afternoon in Antholz.

The victory went to the Russian quartet of Svetlana Sleptsova, Anna Bogaliy-Titovets, Natalia Guseva and Olga Zaitseva, who had already demonstrated their current top form in the sprint the day before. The reigning Olympic champions got off to a lightning start and took the lead with starting runner Sleptsova, who only had one miss. Bogaliy-Titovets, Guseva and Zaitseva then controlled the race and won in 1:11.14,7 hours, almost a minute ahead of Sweden.

The Scandinavians won the last relay race in Oberhof. They were also among the top favorites in Antholz, but gave up the win after a mediocre performance from Anna Carin Zidek, who missed four targets. In the end, the Swedes separated Russia from 57,1 seconds. After an incredible comeback, the German team took third place and climbed onto the podium for the second time this winter after winning in Hochfilzen. Starting runner Sabrina Buchholz had a pitch-black day and moved to Kathrin Hitzer in a disappointing 16th place. However, Hitzner, Miriam Gössner and Andrea Henkel then moved up place by place and came third.

Things also went very well for the hosts. The “Azzurre” came in an excellent fifth place behind Belarus. In addition to Roberta Fiandino, three South Tyroleans ran in the Italian team: Michela Ponza, Karin Oberhofer and Katja Haller.

In the World Cup discipline ranking, Sweden remained in first place ahead of Germany and Russia.

voting for the race Olga Zaitseva, Russia We are back. It was a very important victory for our team today. The four of us knew that we had to give everything to be at the top here. Step by step we are getting closer to our top form, just as was planned with a view to the World Cup in our country. I felt the great atmosphere here today and the support was great, not only from the Russian fans but also from fans from all other countries. Antholz is one of my favorite places in the World Cup.

Anna Maria Nilsson, Sweden Our team showed a really great race today, but the Russian team was just a little bit better than us today. The podium is a small birthday present for our coach Wolfgang Pichler, who will be 56 years old tomorrow. Looking at the World Cup, I don't think we're favorites. But we have pretty good chances.

Andrea Henkel, Germany Sabrina Buchholz is now completely finished. She is a good shooter, but the conditions in the competition were different than when she was zeroing in. She made the switch, but it didn't help. Kathrin Hitzer showed a good performance. With Miriam Gössner we knew that things could go well or not. We have often started badly and ended up at the top. We had a similar race in 2005 at the World Championships in Hochfilzen, when Uschi Disl didn't shoot so well and we ended up second.
