“Serious situation”: Biathlon talent experiences dramatic hours

Anna Hedström is one of the talented members of the Swedish biathlon team. That's why she was training with the national team in Idre last week, but bad scenes occurred, after which she even had to go to the intensive care unit. “I couldn’t imagine that the situation would be so serious,” Hedström told the Swedish newspaper Allehanda.se . What happened? The 24-year-old was already struggling with physical problems at the end of the summer. “The form suddenly disappeared,” said the Swede. Her pulse increased slightly, she had back problems and occasionally felt stitches in her upper body area. “We thought it had to do with the training load,” says Hedström. So she reduced her workload a little and took longer breaks, but there was no improvement, on the contrary. “It got worse and worse.” Blood clots in both lungs “When I was training with the team last week, I started having trouble breathing even when I was just walking normally. That's when I realized that something was very wrong. So I stopped training,” said the biathlete, who then went to the hospital with her boyfriend Malte Stefansson, also a biathlete. There she received the diagnosis: blood clots in both lungs. “The situation was serious. You could see from the pictures that it had been like this for a long time,” said Hedström, who was then transferred to the intensive care unit at the University Hospital in Umeå. “Sometimes reason is more important than will.” Anna Hedstrom “I stayed there one night and spent another on another ward. “Fortunately, I didn’t have to have an operation, but as a therapy I now have to take blood thinners for six months,” says the biathlete.
