Fatal shooting: Wierer misses out on an Olympic medal

You can almost feel sorry for Dorothea Wierer. The 31-year-old Rasner had recently won the Olympic dress rehearsal in the individual competition in Antholz and therefore started her first race at these Winter Games with high expectations. It was finally time for her first Olympic medal. For a long time she ran towards this goal with hope - until she took herself out of the race at the last standing stop. In the end, the 2020 individual world champion took 18th place.

But first things first: Wierer took things slowly on the starting lap, but noticeably increased the speed after the first error-free prone shooting. Although she received a one-minute penalty for the first standing shot, the missed shot didn't throw her off course.

Unlike in the mixed relay on Saturday, this time the material and muscles played their part, Wierer literally glided over the demanding circuit. She passed the third shooting flawlessly, but then came the big disillusionment: At her last stop at the shooting range, Wierer clearly missed the target twice while standing. The medal dream was shattered. With an additional two penalty minutes under her belt, she finally reached the goal completely exhausted. They were two and a half minutes behind the leaders. Herrmann surprises everyone There, at the top of the rankings, is the name Denise Herrmann, completely unexpectedly. The 33-year-old from Saxony, who won relay bronze as a cross-country skier in Sochi in 2014, ran the race of her life and surprised the entire competition with just one shooting error and a brilliant performance on the cross-country ski trail. With the gold she crowned her extraordinary career, the highlight of which so far was the pursuit world championship title in 2019.

Herrmann hardly had any experts on the list this Monday - other than Marte Olsbu Røiseland. The overall World Cup leader from Norway missed two shots, but still saved the bronze medal. Ahead of her, Frenchwoman Anais Chevalier-Bouchet (a mistake) grabbed the silver.

In addition to Wierer, the other Azzurre also had to bite the bullet. For Lisa Vittozzi, the race was over early after an incredible five mistakes in the first shooting. Federica Sanfilippo from Ridnaun finished in 47th place with five penalty minutes, while the young Michela Carrara also lined up at the back of the field.
