Overall World Cup victory: Dorothea Wierer makes history

Dorothea Wierer is currently the best biathlete in the world! If there were still any doubts, the racer definitely put them out of the way ten days before her 29th birthday by winning the overall World Cup. A 12th place in the last race of the season, the mass start at Holmenkollen, was enough for her to defend her leading position against Lisa Vittozzi and Anastasiya Kuzmina. With 904 points, she was 22 points ahead of her team rival in the end.

As big as the gap was at the end, Wierer had to worry about winning the shot on Sunday afternoon: after a perfect prone shooting, she missed three times on her second shot. Her competitors suddenly sensed their chance, but then also made a mistake on the shooting range. After her brief blackout, the South Tyrolean quickly recovered, only incurred a total of two penalty laps and ended up finishing directly behind Vittozzi (11th) and Kuzmina (10th), who were competing in their last races. That was easily enough to secure victory in the overall standings.

For Wierer, it is the culmination of a phenomenal season in which she has already won the mass start world championship title, two further world championship team medals and the small crystal ball in the pursuit world cup.

Öberg snatches the small ball away from Wierer On the last day of the race, however, Wierer's total triumph didn't work out. The blame for this lies with the in-form Swede Hanna Öberg, who clinched victory with an extremely strong performance and pushed the “Azzurra” off the top of the mass start ranking at the last minute. Second place at Holmenkollen went to the Norwegian local hero Tiril Eckhoff, followed by the American Clare Egan in third place, who achieved her first podium finish.
