Gold! Wierer is summer world champion

For the first time in several years, Italy's national biathlon team took part in the summer world championships - and made people sit up and take notice at the start of the elite races. In the Chiemgau Arena, the Azzurre were finally able to celebrate a double victory in front of 3000 spectators. But first things first: Before the race took place in the afternoon, the qualification took place in the morning. The athletes had to cover a distance of 4,5 kilometers and shoot twice. Although Dorothea Wierer missed twice in the standing attempt, she didn't miss a beat in ninth place. Lisa Vittozzi crossed the finish line a second ahead of her, having missed three targets while standing. The Czech Marketa Davidova set the best time (one mistake). Superstar Elvira Öberg missed the final of the top 30 with five missed shots. In this, the athletes had to complete 7,5 kilometers on their roller skis, shooting four times. In the final, Wierer showed a committed performance from the start and was particularly strong on the roller skis. The South Tyrolean took the lead after the first error-free shooting session and also made it through the second shooting session without any errors. Wierer made a mistake in the third and fourth shooting, but the victory could not be taken away from her. Lisa Vittozzi from Sappada/Plodn left a total of three targets at the shooting range and reached the target 5,5 seconds after Wierer. Third place went to the Finn Nastassia Kinnunen (+13,9 seconds), who cleared all the targets but was significantly slower on the roller skis than Azzurre. Horn triumphs in the men's category There was no South Tyrolean at the start for the men, but there were two youngsters, Tommaso Giacomel and Dider Bionaz. While the former confidently qualified for the final in third place, Bionaz was eliminated with three errors. The world championship title was taken by the German Philipp Horn (2 errors), who had the upper hand in the final sprint against Sebastian Samuelsson from Sweden (3 errors). His compatriot Peppe Femling came third (3 errors). Giacomel did not finish the race after making three mistakes in the first two shooting sessions. The Summer World Championships in the Bavarian biathlon mecca have the largest starting field ever. In recent years, most top nations have skipped this event.
