Good news for Italy's biathlon team

Lisa Vittozzi trained again in Oberhof on Monday morning. The 28-year-old did a few laps during official training and worked on her form at the shooting range. The short-term flu illness was a shame for Vittozzi, because after her fifth place in the sprint, her starting position in the pursuit would have been promising.

The women continue with a singles match in Oberhof on Wednesday. It is not yet guaranteed that Vittozzi will be there in her flagship discipline. But the prospects are now at least looking much better again. In the individual competition over 15 kilometers, in which a penalty minute is added for every mistake, Vittozzi would normally be a great candidate for a medal. In this discipline she celebrated her only win of the season in Ruhpolding. She is also in first place in the individual rankings in the World Cup.

The fight for places The fact that Vittozzi is already training again is a relief for the entire team. In the women's relay, which takes place on Saturday, Vittozzi is always a safe bet. It is quite possible that she will form the quartet there with three South Tyroleans. Hannah Auchentaller has so far forced her way into the World Cup. With her 32nd place in the pursuit, for example, she was second best Azzurra. Auchentaller is probably fighting against Samuela Comola for a season ticket. Dorothea Wierer is already set. Rebecca Passler should also be guaranteed a place after her strong season.

With a view to the mass start on Sunday, Wierer, Vittozzi and Tommaso Giacomel from the Italian team have already qualified. They are all in the top 15 in the overall World Cup. The remaining 30 starting places go to the women and men who achieved the best results at the World Championships in Oberhof. Lukas Hofer (he has collected 19 points in Oberhof so far) and Auchentaller (17) can – as of now – have legitimate hopes of taking part in the mass start.

The news spread like wildfire at the Biathlon World Championships in Oberhof on Saturday afternoon that Lisa Vittozzi could not take part in the women's pursuit. On Sunday, from an azure perspective, she was sorely missed at the competition. Now there is good news again.
