IBU Cup Ridnaun: Hinz sets an exclamation mark - Taschler defies fever

Even before the start of the women's race there was a bang from a South Tyrolean perspective because Michela Ponza decided not to start. The woman from Val Gardena had a severe cough and so she decided not to race so as not to endanger further starts this winter.

The sprint competition was then a “German affair”. Vanessa Hinz, who switched from cross-country skiing to biathlon only a year and a half ago, remained clean twice at the shooting range and won by 14,5 seconds over Kathrin Hitzer-Lang, who missed once. The next three places went to biathletes from Russia.

The best “Azzurra” this time was Roberta Fiandino in 16th place, while Federica Sanfilippo failed to score three times in the standing position, but still achieved 23rd place thanks to a courageous running performance.

Norwegian Erlend Bjöntegaard also made no mistakes and was able to maintain a lead of 26.01,6 seconds over Alexey Slepov from Russia with a winning time of 3,6:14,9 minutes. The Russian had to run one penalty loop, while third place finisher Timofey Lapshin (also Russia) had to rush through the penalty loop twice and lost XNUMX seconds to the winner.

As on the previous day, Daniel Taschler was the best “Azzurro” on Monday. Despite the fever, the Antholzer competed to preserve his chance of competing in the World Cup. Taschler made no mistakes at the shooting range, but lost 1.22 minutes to the winner on the course, but still crossed the finish line in 18th place - ahead of Christian Martinelli. The South Tyrolean has therefore recommended himself for a place in the World Cup.

Ridnaun will also be the venue for an IBU Cup stage next weekend. The program includes an individual competition on Saturday and a sprint on Sunday.

On the sidelines of the event it was also announced that numerous national teams would complete their Olympic preparation in South Tyrol. The Germans are guests in Ridnaun, the Russian Olympic team is pitching its tents in Martell.
