IBU Cup Ridnaun: Russia dominates the first day of competition

A double Olympic champion and seven-time world champion doesn't compete at the IBU Cup every day. So it's no wonder that all eyes were on Laura Dahlmeier in the single mixed relay on Thursday morning. Together with her relay partner Roman Rees, Dahlmeier fought for a long time to win the day in her very first IBU Cup competition. In the end, the Russian duo Anastasiia Morozova/Sergey Korastylev were a blink of an eye faster than Germany. On the home straight, Korastylev had the upper hand in the duel with Rees. Third place went to Ukraine with Yuliia Zhuravok and Vitaliy Trush.

“I was ill for a long time and started the season late. It made sense to start in the IBU Cup and especially here in Ridnaun and get a taste of competition. It's nice to be back again. And it was fun because we were able to fight for victory for a long time,” said Laura Dahlmeier at the finish. Italy, which fielded Samuela Comola and Daniele Cappellari, finished in eleventh place. A total of 25 nations took part.

When two duels, the third is happy The mixed relay finally took place in Ridnaun at lunchtime. At first it looked like a Scandinavian success, because after the first change Norway was in the lead. After that, the Swedes were ahead until the last shooting. Ultimately, however, victory went to the Russian quartet, which consisted of Irina Kazakevich, Svetlana Mironova, Yury Shopin and Anton Babikov. Russia won by 8,9 seconds over Team Sweden with Johanna Skottheim, Elisabeth Hoegberg, Oskar Brandt and Simon Hallstroem. Norway was the third team to reach the podium at the award ceremony. Karoline Offigstad Skottheim, Eline Grue, Vebjoern Soerum and Fredrik Gjesbakk were at the start here.

Italy finished tenth out of 23 participating nations. The “Azzurri” included Irene Lardschneider from Val Gardena, Michela Carrara, Saverio Zini and Pietro Dutto. Dutto had to go into the penalty loop three times after the prone stage. “I’m actually happy with the first competition. But it was very tiring today. Now I'm looking forward to the sprint and will do everything so that I can also take part in the pursuit competition," said Lardschneider from South Tyrol.

The IBU Cup in Ridnaun continues on Saturday with the sprint and on Sunday with the pursuit competition. There is an official training session tomorrow, Friday.
