IBU President Dahlin: “We have to clean up the shop”

“We have to clean up the shop, revise the rules and regain trust,” said the 63-year-old Swede on Sunday on the sidelines of the World Cup in Hochfilzen, Austria. What is important, Dahlin continued, is “responsible leadership and transparency. We need a good plan.” In the coming weeks and months, the IBU wants to work out a “strategy for the future” together with the associations and partners. The plans are to be presented at an extraordinary congress in September 2019.

Russia in the sights of the Austrian justice system Dahlin was elected as Anders Besseberg's successor three months ago. The Norwegian resigned in April amid massive allegations of corruption and doping cover-ups. The IBU currently has to deal with the issue of doping again. According to Dahlin, the IBU has “a number of cases on the table that we now have to work through.” Just on Thursday, the Austrian Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office (WKStA) in Hochfilzen informed ten members of the Russian team, including five athletes, about an investigation into possible doping violations at the 2017 World Cup.

Most recently, the IBU imposed strict guidelines on Russia's RBU association for regaining full membership. A working group will discuss the twelve criteria that the Russian association must meet on Wednesday in Moscow. He then expects “a report on the progress. It is very important that Russia recognizes these criteria,” Dahlin said.

Although Russian athletes are allowed to compete in all IBU events, the RBU has no voting rights in the IBU Congress. In addition, no biathlon races will take place in Russia until 2022.
