IBU reforms: Green light for ethics code and ethics committee

On Sunday, the IBU announced that the board had approved the modified ethics code and the introduction of a new ethics committee. However, the innovations still have to be approved by the delegates at the next IBU Congress in Porac, Croatia (September 5th to 9th).

The IBU has been in a deep crisis of credibility for several weeks. At the beginning of April it became public that investigations by the Austrian economic and corruption prosecutor's office in Vienna into suspected doping and fraud as well as accepting gifts had been ongoing since the end of 2017. The investigations are aimed, among others, at former IBU President Anders Besseberg and ex-Secretary General Nicole Resch as well as Russian athletes and supervisors.

In the wake of the doping and corruption scandal, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) stopped all payments to the IBU. The IOC said that the donations should only be continued when, among other things, a new president has been elected and the anti-doping procedure has been reformed.

The IBU recently decided at one of its board meetings to carry out an in-depth investigation into its own structures. The anti-doping program is to be examined by the Association of Leading National Anti-Doping Agencies (iNado). In addition, discussions with the independent authority for doping testing procedures (ITA) are to be intensified.
