WM: A lot is possible for the South Tyroleans in singles

There will be a change in the “Azzurri” squad - with regard to the sprint: Thierry Chenal will replace Giuseppe Montello. The Aosta native will start the race with start number 5. The men's individual competition over 20 km is the longest race in the biathlon circuit.

As a reminder: In contrast to all other types of competition, there are no penalties in individual competition: each shooting error is punished with a penalty minute, which is added to the athlete's total time. This means that shooting (4 shots) has a higher priority in this competition than in the other races and there are sometimes surprising results.

The South Tyroleans Lukas Hofer (start number 29) and Dominik Windisch (56) already had reason to celebrate at the World Championships in Östersund when they won bronze in the mixed relay together with Dorothea Wierer and Lisa Vittozzi. Hofer in particular, the best-placed “Azzurro” in the overall World Cup (13th), botched his previous individual races at this World Cup with places 52 and 42 in the sprint and pursuit.

At least Dominik Windisch made people sit up and take notice in the pursuit by moving from 27th place to 17th place. Windisch was able to achieve his best result of the season so far, fifth in Canmore, in the individual competition.

The big favorite for gold is Johannes Thingnes Bø (start number 53). The Norwegian overall World Cup winner, who has dominated the season so far and won 13 of 20 races, has already won two gold medals and one silver at the World Cup in Sweden. Thanks to his excellent running form, he could also make up for a penalty minute or two.
