Italy's biathlon under new leadership: the South Tyroleans should take care of it

Alexander Inderst is the name of the new head coach of Italy's best biathletes. He succeeds Andreas Zingerle, who shaped this sport in this country like no one else before him.

Inderst is 44 years old, comes from Ridnaun and is married to the former world-class biathlete Karin Oberhofer. He used to be a biathlete himself, but didn't make it to the top international level. The Wipptaler has been working in various positions in the Azzurri coaching team for several years, most recently he was supposed to lead the B national team to the 2026 Olympic Games. Klaus Höllrigl is in charge In the future, Inderst will work under the leadership of another South Tyrolean. Klaus Höllrigl takes on the position of technical director, who is de facto responsible for biathlon in the Italian winter sports association. In this role, he succeeds Fabrizio Curtaz, who will in future be appointed head of the future project “Milano Cortina 2026”. The 42-year-old Höllrigl, who lives in Goldrain, ran in the World Cup from 2003 to 2006 and then moved to the support staff. Most recently he worked as a shooting coach for Italy's biathlon team.

Höllrigl's role at the shooting range will be the Finn Jonne Kähkönen who recently did good work in Finland and will mainly support the Azzurre in the future - together with Mirco Romanin. Fabio Cianciana and Andrea Zattoni will - under the leadership of Inderst - look after the men's team. Also new on board are: Christian Favre, Formerly Martin Fourcade's serviceman, and Italy's former cross-country skiing great Giorgio Di Centa, who belong to the technical staff. The World Cup squad is ready Dorothea Wierer made the choice of these trainers in her decision, to extend your career for another year, clearly reinforced. The exceptional athlete from Rasen forms, together with Lukas Hofer, the so-called “Elite Team” in the Italian biathlon selection.

Another 18 athletes – including South Tyroleans Patrick Braunhofer, David Zingerle, Hannah Auchentaller, Irene Lardschneider, Rebecca Passler and Linda Zingerle – are part of the “Milano Cortina 2026” team. All 20 biathletes together form Italy's expanded World Cup squad for the 2022/23 season. However, the 171-time World Cup starter Federica Sanfilippo, who had to fight her way into the premier class of biathlon on her own last season, will not be there. For weeks there was a lot of guesswork about Andreas Zingerle's successor as head coach of Italy's national biathlon team. Now the winter sports association has revealed the secret and at the same time announced a whole series of other personnel decisions.
