Julia Simon is the best biathlete this winter. In this respect, her 10th place in the sprint was a bit of a disappointment for the Frenchwoman. In their flagship discipline, the pursuit, Simon has now forgotten this. In the fog of Oberhof on Sunday, the 26-year-old only missed one target, caught up with Denise Herrmann-Wick by over a minute and won her first individual medal at the World Championships - and it shone gold.

At the last shooting there was a big showdown between Simon and Hermann-Wick. Because the sprint world champion made one more mistake, she had to settle for silver. Nevertheless: For the Germans, the home World Cup is going more than just as planned. The Norwegian Marte Olsbu Røiseland took bronze.

Wierer and Auchentaller are improving For Dorothea Wierer, her chances of winning a medal were slim anyway after her 19th place in the sprint. At the latest after Wierer missed once in each of the first three shooting sessions, it became clear that a surprise was no longer possible. Nevertheless, the 32-year-old fought her way up to 11th place in the end. This made her the best Azzurra. Lisa Vittozzi was unable to take part in the World Cup pursuit due to illness.

Second best Azzurra on Sunday was Hannah Auchentaller. In only her second World Cup appearance, the 21-year-old made up another place and ended up in 32nd place - despite five shooting errors. Auchentaller has never been this good before. This means that the woman from Antholz is also eligible for a relay mission. Rebecca Passler, on the other hand, fell from 34th to 45th place. However, her use in the women's relay should be assured anyway.
