Junior World Championships: The usual suspects and a big surprise

It had rained heavily overnight, and so the Thursday competitions had to be postponed, especially since drainage channels had to be dug at the shooting range and on the course.

The men's competition remained exciting until the end, as many favorites often missed the targets, while some outsiders (including Latvia's Ingus Deksnis) hit exactly. But then Sindre Pettersen, who started late, ensured three precise shots, but made things even more exciting with two errors in the final shot. But the lead was enough and the Norwegian won comfortably ahead of the German David Zobel. With a brilliant final lap, the Russian Nikita Lobastow snatched the bronze medal from the Austrian Michael Trieb. And for the Latvian Deksnis, who had been dreaming of a historic medal for a long time, only fifth place remained.

Paolo Rodigari was the best for the “Azzurri” on this cloudy morning. Although he only ran the 46th course time, he ended up in 18th place thanks to pretty good shooting (20 hits from 15 shots). Two places behind was the strong running Michael Durand, who received four penalty minutes. Further back are Daniele Cappellari (39th) and Luca Ghiglione (46th).

The women got a big surprise in the afternoon. And once again an athlete from Canada made sure of this. Megan Bankes cleaned all four shots and left the shooting range with a big smile. Her pace remained consistently good on the increasingly difficult course, and so she celebrated a big victory, also because the Austrian Julia Schwaiger missed the last shot and had to “make do” with silver. The German Anna Weidel returned positively with bronze, after also having to go through a weaker period.

Italy's girls ran a very positive race, with the fast Michela Carrara making too many mistakes and only finishing 42nd. Ginevra Rocchia did better in 23rd and Rachele Fanesi in 31st.

Junior World Championships: The usual suspects and a big surprise

The junior individual competition at the Biathlon World Championships in Osrblie, Slovakia ended with medals for the “usual suspects”, namely athletes from Norway, Germany and Russia. The Italian quartet came out of the affair honorably, but no one was able to shine.
