Karin Oberhofer wins World Cup bronze!

What a performance by Karin Oberhofer! The 29-year-old South Tyrolean crowned her incredibly successful season with the greatest individual success of her career. After one mistake in each of the first two shooting sessions, she was still in 19th position, but then came the petite Eisacktaler's irresistible chase. She made up position after position, sank the remaining eight targets without batting an eyelid and started the final lap in sixth place. There Oberhofer then made the superstars Gabriela Soukalova and Darya Domracheva look old and finally intercepted the third-placed Franziska Hildebrand. In the final sprint she put Domracheva in her place and became the bronze medalist.

Historical success

Oberhofer is celebrating her first individual medal at a major biathlon event. So far, the relay bronze medal from last Friday and the one from 2013 in Nove Mesto have adorned her trophy collection. At the Olympic Games in Sochi she also won bronze in the mixed relay.

However, this is also one of the greatest successes in Italian biathlon history, because never before has an “Azzurra” made it onto the podium at a world championship.

Dorothea Wierer makes a mistake at the shooting range

Only the flawless Ukrainian Valj Semerenko was faster than Oberhofer in the 12,5-kilometer competition in Kontiolahti, who crossed the finish line with a lead of 6,2 seconds over second-placed Franziska Preuß from Germany.

Meanwhile, there was nothing to gain for the second Azzurra, who was in action on the last day of the World Cup: Dorothea Wierer missed six times at the shooting range and didn't get past 27th place.

The title fights will conclude late Sunday afternoon with the men's mass start race.

At the end of the Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti, Karin Oberhofer once again set an absolute highlight. The woman from Feldthurn ran sensationally to third place. Gold went to Ukraine's Valj Semerenko.
