Karin Oberhofer is back: “Olympics? Hope for a fair chance”

“When I found out about the pregnancy, I was a bit shocked and felt guilty, especially towards my sponsors. But they all supported me – and now I know what a beautiful feeling the birth of a child is,” explained Karin Oberhofer in a recent interview. In July of this year the time had come when little son Paul saw the light of day. Just a few weeks later, Karin Oberhofer completed her first training session. Although still very limited, it is a first step towards the old form. “Of course I coordinate my training with Paul, also because I still have to breastfeed him. “But my relatives support me wherever they can, which is why training and my son Paul are easy to combine,” said Oberhofer in an interview with SportNews.

Sniffed racing air The biathlete from Feldthurns completed her first snow training in November, competed in a race for the first time two weeks ago in Forni Avoltri and took part in the IBU Cup (second highest racing series in biathlon) in Obertilliach last week. What happens now? “I'll be competing in another IBU Cup race at the beginning of January and then we'll have to see what happens next. I feel good - and given that I've lost almost a year of training, my form is also good." This is underlined not only by her victory in the Italian Cup, but also by her 16th place in the sprint of the IBU Cup. What chances does she think she has of taking part in the Olympics in Pyeongchang in February? “Of course I would be very interested in the Olympics. That's why I hope to get a fair chance of qualifying. In the end the coaches will decide.”

In recent weeks there has also been news that Oberhofer will win another Olympic bronze medal following the subsequent suspension of Russian biathlete Olga Vilukhina. “Coni President Giovanni Malagò called me and said that the Russian woman had been blocked. But until it’s official that I move up to third place, I don’t really think much about it.”
