A blast to start! Wierer wins in Antholz

Although the Südtirol Arena was not nearly sold out on Thursday afternoon, Dorothea Wierer brought the atmosphere in the stands and along the course to a boiling point in the first race. When she crossed the finish line, it finally got really loud: The local hero from Niederrasen secured victory in the women's sprint!

Wierer needed just 21 minutes to cover the 7,5 kilometers and put ten cartridges at the finish without batting an eyelid. At the shooting range she acted at a fast pace as usual, and on the cross-country ski trail she steadily built up speed. That's why the 32-year-old knew when she reached the finish that that could be enough to get to the top today.

An outsider makes everyone tremble But Wierer still had to tremble once, namely when Chloe Chevalier, who was also faultless, started the final lap. She had never been on the podium in her career, but after the last shooting she was suddenly six seconds ahead of Wierer. However, Chevalier lost her lead in the last kilometer and finally crossed the finish line in the heart-stopping finale, 2,8 seconds behind. With that, Wierer's home win was set in stone. Third place went to the Swedish overall World Cup runner-up Elvira Öberg, who also had no penalties.

For the exceptional athlete from the Pustertal, this is the fifth success in her local valley and the ninth podium finish overall in the South Tyrol Arena. The last time she was at the top of the podium was last year in the mass start at home. At the same time, this is also Wierer's first win of the season and thus the current peak of her increasing form curve for weeks. Wierer impressively proved three weeks before the start of the World Cup: she is a force to be reckoned with at the medal ceremony!

Lisa Vittozzi, who had to complete two extra loops, slipped out of the top ten with the 13th time. Samuela Comola took position 25, while the young Antholzers Hannah Auchentaller and Rebecca Passler placed beyond the points. Both will be 42nd and 54th at the start of the pursuit on Saturday and will therefore be competing in their second World Cup race in front of their home crowd.

After Wierer's opening coup, the focus of biathlon fans in Antholz is now on the men. They will compete in their sprint competition on Friday at 14.30:XNUMX p.m.
