Crystal instead of precious metal: Wierer can take comfort

A year after her triumph in Antholz, Wierer has to give up the title as individual world champion, but she is assured of victory in the discipline World Cup. And that despite the fact that she didn't get higher than 9th place on Tuesday in Pokljuka after a very strong start.

Wierer offered an excellent performance for a long time at the start of the second week of the World Cup. She completed the first two laps at the shooting range without any mistakes and initially set standards on the cross-country ski trail. But when she sat down to shoot prone for the second time, the tide turned: Wierer missed once and was assessed a one-minute penalty. The picture was then repeated at the second standing stop. Although she was still close to the podium, Wierer finally lost her strength on the final lap. The green one was only there for a very short time when she reached the finish line, she was quickly replaced by her worst opponents and finally pushed to the edge of the top 10.

Since only three individual competitions will be held this season and one result may be deleted, a 1st place in Kontiolahti and a 4th place in Antholz are enough for Wierer to secure victory in the discipline ranking. This is the 6th crystal in the 30-year-old racer's career. Curious: In addition to Wierer, Lisa Hauser also receives a small crystal ball. After coming fourth in the World Cup singles, the North Tyrolean also has 4 points in the ranking. Davidova surprises everyone On Tuesday, however, the gold medal went to the Czech Republic completely unexpectedly: Marketa Davidova, who has never won an individual in her career and has not yet been on the podium this season, shocked the entire competition with a flawless performance - both on the shooting range and in the cross-country ski trail. She beat individual Olympic champion Hanna Öberg by 27,9 seconds and took the gold medal.

Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold took third place behind Öberg. The Norwegian pushed Hauser, who was completely unleashed on the cross-country ski trail, off the podium.

Apart from Wierer, the Azzurre all played a supporting role. Michela Carrara took 31st place, Lisa Vittozzi only managed 38th place after a completely botched first shooting. The two South Tyroleans Federica Sanfilippo (8 shooting errors) and Irene Lardschneider (6) were 83rd and 85th respectively.
