Lardschneider after promotion: “Learn from the best”

The fact that Lardschneider is a promising talent became clear at the 2017 Junior World Championships in Osrblie, Slovakia. At that time she won three medals in the youth category, including two gold medals in the sprint and the pursuit. Three years followed in which the Val Gardena native established herself in the IBU Cup and also got a taste of World Cup air. However, she has not (yet) achieved her final breakthrough. The promotion to the A squad should help her with this. SportNews spoke to her.

How happy are you that you can now leave the house and train somewhat “normally”? Irene Lardschneider: “Very happy. Even when it was possible to move more than 200 meters from your own house, I did training sessions. Last week I completed the first kilometers on roller skis. Shooting training in Wolkenstein was also on the program. Nevertheless, the situation remains special because there are no trainers on site. We only communicate over the phone.”

Did the promotion give you a boost? How did you find out about it? “It was a strange end to the season. Usually you sit down with the coaches at the end of the winter and review the season. This was not possible this year for known reasons. That's why there was so much uncertainty. I was even more pleased when I found out about the promotion on the phone. The anticipation and motivation for the coming season is great.”

What do you expect from the joint training sessions with Dorothea Wierer and Lisa Vittozzi? “In the last two years, the B squad has already had the opportunity to train with the A group a few times, so I'm not breaking new ground, so to speak. Nevertheless, it is a pleasure to learn something from the best in the world. “

What do you mean by that exactly? “Above all, the direct comparison is exciting. You have the same circumstances - and you have to withstand the pressure because they will most likely fire the shots faster. Ultimately, biathlon is an individual sport, you have to concentrate on yourself.”

But you haven't trained in the group yet... “No, the first training camp is not scheduled until the end of June. I hope that it can take place, because nothing is fixed yet. Until then, we will probably train in small groups at the respective bases. I train with Dorothea and Tommaso Giacomel in Fiemme Valley. However, I don’t know when it will happen for the first time.”

What are you hoping for next season? “It's hard to say which races I will do next season. The tests with the other athletes will ultimately reveal that, but my goal is definitely to take part in World Cup races – provided I am in a form that allows me to keep up there. If I'm too far away from that, I have to try to develop further through the IBU Cup (the second highest competition series, editor's note). I’m still young and so I still have a lot ahead of me.”
