The last shooting cost Lukas Hofer top spot

After the last of a total of four shootings, five biathletes fought for victory: the eventual winner Anton Shipulin, the two Frenchmen Jean Guillaume Beatrix and Martin Fourcade, Simon Eder from Austria and the Swede Fredrik Lindström. One and a half kilometers from the finish, Beatrix made an attack and it seemed as if he could pull away and celebrate his first World Cup victory. But after the final timing, the Frenchman fell, broke a stick and had to let his four competitors pass.

Shipulin and Fourcade, however, increased the pace. In the end, the 27-year-old Russian won in 35.16,8:1,2 minutes, 1,4 seconds ahead of Fourcade and XNUMX seconds ahead of Simon Eder. For Shipulin it was the seventh World Cup victory.

Until the last shooting it looked like a top ten result for Lukas Hofer too. But the Montaler risked everything, made two mistakes (three in total) and fell back to 21st place. Hofer was also intercepted by Dominik Windisch, who finished 19th (also three misses). The previous World Cup leader Emil Hegle Svendsen finished 17th with four errors and was overtaken in the overall ranking by Fourcade and Shipulin.

The Biathlon World Cup is now taking a break and will continue on January 6th with the fourth stage in Oberhof. The biathletes then head to Ruhpolding before the World Cup circus visits Antholz from January 21st to 25th.
