Martin Fourcade wins mass start in Antholz - Audio Windisch

After the women's relay, the biathlon festival continued with the men's mass start on Saturday afternoon in Antholz in bright sunshine. With Martin Fourcade, one of the top favorites prevailed, as the Frenchman has already been on the podium five times in the World Cup this season. However, he was still missing a win and he got it today with a strong performance on the shooting range. After 15 km and 35.33 minutes of racing, Fourcade was 17,2 seconds ahead of Swede Björn Ferry and 17,6 seconds ahead of Russian Anton Shipulin. Both missed the victory with two errors at the shooting range. For Shipulin it was the second podium finish in Antholz after his victory in the sprint race on Thursday.

The Austrian Daniel Mesotitsch had to be content with a thankless fourth place ahead of the Germans Arnd Peiffer and Michael Greis. 7th place went to Ole Elmar Björndalen. The Norwegian competed in a race in Antholz for the first time in two years. Both last year and in the sprint race on Thursday he had to forego starting for health reasons.

In the overall World Cup ranking, the Norwegian Tarej Boe, who was only 15th today, defended the yellow jersey ahead of his compatriot Emil Hegle Svendsen, ninth in the mass start with five shooting errors. Svendsen is now six points behind Boe.

Host Italy was represented by three athletes. Markus Windisch almost caused a huge sensation. Before the last shooting, the 26-year-old from Oberrasen was surprisingly in the lead. But then the nerves and excitement played tricks on him. Windisch missed three targets and slipped back to 14th place in the final standings. Lukas Hofer crossed the finish line five places behind. The Montaler missed a better placement in the first shooting with three errors. Christian De Lorenzi ended up in 21st place.

Tomorrow the World Cup week in Antholz will end with the women's mass start at 12.45 p.m. and the men's relay at 14.45 p.m.

Martin Fourcade, winner Of course I'm very happy about my victory. The conditions today were fantastic. After the sprint I was a little unsettled because I only came 21st and shot very poorly. Things went better today, after the missed shot I fully attacked. I think I'm in very good shape, but it happens very quickly and suddenly you end up in 20th place or even further back.

Björn Ferry, 2nd place When I was zeroing in, I noticed that the conditions weren't exactly easy today and that's how it was. I hesitated too long with the last shot because I really wanted to hit him, and then it happened. I run well in Antholz because I like the sun so much. We have a very good chance tomorrow in the relay, even if our fourth man isn't ready yet. But in Antholz the races are decided at the shooting range and not on the cross-country ski trail.

Anton Shipulin, 3rd place I'm annoyed about my two misses, but overall I'm happy with my podium finish today after my win in the sprint race on Thursday. I hope that I will have a good World Cup because it is taking place in my country and of course I want to do particularly well there. I also hope the same for my sister.
