Biathlon: Raid on IBU headquarters - Besseberg and Resch in sight

Salzburg (SID) Austrian investigators searched the headquarters of the World Biathlon Federation IBU in Salzburg on Tuesday. The IBU confirmed this in a press release on Wednesday. It also said that the investigation was directed against the incumbent President Anders Besseberg from Norway (72) and the German Secretary General Nicole Resch (42). Due to the investigation, Resch resigned from her position with immediate effect; IBU Executive Director Martin Kuchenmeister will take over her duties for the time being. Besseberg had already announced in recent weeks that he would no longer run for president. The new association boss and the entire board are to be elected at the IBU congress in early September in the Croatian Adriatic town of Porec. The IBU, the statement continued, was taking the matter “extremely seriously.” The association is committed to continuing to meet the highest standards of transparency and good governance. The IBU will provide information about further developments in due course. Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov has made serious allegations against the IBU. According to a report in the French daily Le Monde, which refers to an investigative report by the World Anti-Doping Agency, the former head of the anti-doping laboratory in Moscow and an unnamed informant claim that the IBU doped Russian athletes in exchange for bribes protected. The IBU has been repeatedly criticized in the past for its supposedly lax approach to the fight against doping. For example, numerous nations recently boycotted the World Cup final, which the IBU held in Tyumen, Siberia, despite the Russian doping scandal.
