Mixed relay: women's top, men's flop

The biathlon mixed relay was the first competition at the Games in Beijing with South Tyrolean participation. Dorothea Wierer and Lukas Hofer started for the Azzurri together with Lisa Vittozzi and Thomas Bormolini. In the end, Italy finished in 9th place. At the halfway point of the race it still looked excellent.

Vittozzi and Wierer each showed a strong race and coped relatively well with the difficult wind conditions. Vittozzi handed over to Wierer in second place. The woman from Niederrasner was then able to maintain this position. At the halfway point of the race, Italy was still in second place. When switching to Bormolini, the gap to France, who had been leading until then, was only 2 seconds.

The 30-year-old Lombard was initially able to keep up well in the prone shooting, but he had to go into the penalty loop after the standing shooting. Bormolini also lost a lot of time on the track. When he switched to Lukas Hofer, Italy was only in 7th place. The gap to the leaders was 48 seconds. Gold for Norway At the latest after the prone shooting of the final runners, the medal issue for Italy was over. Hofer had to reload 3 times. However, Russia, France and Norway took the lead. After the last shooting session, Russia's Eduard Latypov went into the final round first. But France's Quentin Fillon Maillet (+2 seconds) and Norway's Johannes Thingnes Bø (+9) came flying in.

In the end, the Norwegian superstar had the longest breath and passed Fillon Maillet and Latypov on the home straight in the icy cold. This means that the Norwegian mixed relay team (Marte Olsbu Røiseland, Tiril Eckhoff and the Bø brothers), who started the race as favorites, still won gold. Italy, however, had to settle for 9th place.
